Nevada law requires that both parents support their children. As such, child support amounts are determined by specific formulas set forth in statutes. When determining child support, courts must follow the statutory formulas and statutory caps. Judges are permitted to deviate from the formula on the bases of specific factors, also set forth in the statutes.
In general, primary physical custodians received child support. In those cases, only the non-custodial parent’s income is used to determine the child support amount. In contrast, where parents share joint physical custody, child support is determined using each parent’s income and the statutory formula.
